Die Artothek wurde 1986 auf Initiative der Stadt Caen gegründet und gehört zu den ersten Artotheken in Frankreich. Seit mehr als 30 Jahren gründet sie ihren Sitz mit dem Wunsch, sich jeden Tag neu zu erfinden. Seit dem 14. September 2013 ist sie an ihrem neuen Standort, dem Herzogspalast, untergebracht. Der Herzogspalast wurde im 14. Jahrhundert erbaut und im Laufe der Jahrhunderte, insbesondere im 19. Jahrhundert, umgebaut. Er befindet sich im Besitz der Stadt Caen, gegenüber dem ursprünglichen Eingang der Abbaye aux Hommes, von der vermutlich Gäste gehostet wurden. Das von der Stadt Caen restaurierte Gebäude, das seit mehreren Jahrzehnten weitgehend unbewohnt ist, bietet eine Fläche von 650 m2 für die Artothek, Bereiche für zeitgenössische Kunst.

Depuis plus de 30 ans, elle a fondé son assise avec la volonté de se réinventer chaque jour. Depuis le 14 septembre 2013, elle est installée dans son nouveau site : le Palais Ducal. Construit au XIVe siècle, puis remanié au cours des siècles, notamment au XIXe, le Palais Ducal est une propriété de la ville de Caen, située face à l’entrée originelle de l’Abbaye aux Hommes, dont elle accueillait probablement les hôtes de marque. En grande partie inoccupé depuis plusieurs décennies, le bâtiment restauré par la ville de Caen, offre une superficie de 650 m2 à l'artothèque, Espaces d'art contemporain.
