Lecture by Niklaus Manuel GüdelFerdinand Hodler had a strong affinity for pre-Renaissance Italian painting, particularly the work of Giotto. This lecture invites you to follow the painter through the museum and in the footsteps of the old masters in Italy to understand what Hodler himself sought in his precursors of the Trecento and Quattrocento. It will address, in particular, the question of gesture, to which Hodler attached paramount importance in his own work, readily drawing on religious gestures for his large-scale Symbolist compositions.
Conférence de Niklaus Manuel GüdelFerdinand Hodler nourrissait un goût prononcé pour la peinture italienne de la pré-Renaissance, en particulier pour l’œuvre de Giotto. La présente conférence propose de suivre le peintre au musée et sur la trace des maîtres anciens en Italie pour saisir ce que le peintre cherchait lui-même chez ses précurseurs du Trecento et du Quattrocento. Elle abordera notamment la question du geste, auquel Hodler accorde une importance primordiale dans son propre travail, n’hésitant pas à reprendre une gestuelle religieuse pour ses grandes compositions symbolistes.
