Initiation to Mohiniyattam dance with Thomas Vo Van Tao, rare male performer trained by Kalamandalam Hymavathi and Dr. Neena Prasad.
Mohiniyattam is one of the ten forms of traditional dance in India, whose name refers to Mohini, a nymph with an irresistible magical power.
According to a mythological episode, during the churning of the sea of milk to extract the nectar of immortality, Vishnu took the appearance of Mohini to divert the attention of the Asuras and give the Devas victory.
At the statement of this subterfuge, Shiva, incredulous, would have asked Vishnu to repeat his exploit and would have succumbed, too, to the charm of the nymph.
Hence, perhaps, the ambivalence of this style held to be the feminine counterpart of Kathakali from which it borrows, in particular, its gestures. However, the Mohini Attam is among the dances of soloists and mainly performed by women until recent years.
