Late 19th century. Barcelonnette, a small village in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. A young woman sets sail on a boat bound for Mexico City, opens a small hat shop, gets married, has children, makes her fortune, and returns to Barcelonnette to build her home. This is the heroic story of a woman that has been passed down from generation to generation in Julie Gilbert’s family. But, as she delves into the archives, she begins to wonder if this story might be a fabrication… After all, the 19th century was also the era of female mediums, ghosts, and tales of revenants… The second production by Loup under new co-direction, *Une histoire mexicaine* is a play in the form of a documentary and spiritualist investigation—a hallucinatory, anthropological, and joyful journey between the worlds of the living and the dead—performed by three incredible actresses, a performer, and two musicians playing live on stage.
family history / female medium / Mexico / Barcelonnette / new narratives
3.03 : Discussion on mediumship and writing with author Carla Demierre after the performance.
La 3J, co-direction: For this new Théâtre du Loup production, Julie Gilbert invited Jihane Chouaib, a Franco-Lebanese screenwriter and director, to co-write the script with her. Drawing on their shared Mexican upbringing and their interest in the magical world, they draw parallels between a family-centered, heroic investigation and the story of female mediums who enjoyed great success in the 19th century before being silenced. What if the end of these communications with the invisible world had led us to a loss of sensitivity? To a destruction of our relationship with the living? Following the narrative thread of the narrator and her anthropologist mother, the story gives voice to the invisible—whether they belong to the world of the dead or the living—such as the poet Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz or the Chicana philosopher Gloria Anzaldúa, resonating with a new decolonized and anti-patriarchal narrative. For this production, Julie Gilbert will collaborate with director Aurelia Lüscher and has invited Swiss-Mexican performer Paloma Ayala and the musical duo Kristoff K.Roll to join her on stage.

histoire familiale / femme medium / mexico / barcelonnette / nouveaux récits
