Founded in 1939, Concours de Genève is one of the world’s leading international music competitions. It aims at discovering, promoting and supporting young talented artists, giving them the necessary tools to launch an international career.
The 79th edition celebrates both the viola and conducting, two disciplines returning to Geneva after several years. The Conducting Competition launches in 2025 with preliminary rounds where candidates will lead the Geneva University of Music Orchestra and the Geneva Chamber Orchestra. The semi-finals and finals will follow in 2026, in collaboration with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the OCG, and the Ensemble Contrechamps.
Programme 2025
1st Round - HEM Orchestra
Friday, 31 Oct – Saturday, 1 Nov at 2 PM & 7 PM
During this first round of the Conducting Competition, the 24 candidates will each have 25 minutes of public rehearsal with the Orchestre de la Haute école de musique de Genève to work on or run through excerpts from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 and Schubert’s Symphony No. 5, drawn by lot at the beginning of the round.
Round Table
Saturday, 1 Nov at 5:30 PM
This round table offers a space for reflection and discussion around the profession of conducting. It will address some of the questions that audiences commonly have, such as what qualities are required to become a conductor and, of course, the issue of gender equality. The conversation will also consider how young conductors can build a career in today’s increasingly competitive and globalised environment.
Moderated by journalists Antoine Pecqueur and Charlotte Gardner, this event will bring together special guests and Jury members for an inspiring exchange and dialogue.
2nd Round - L'OCG
Sunday, 2 Nov – Monday, 3 Nov at 2 PM & 7 PM
During the second round of the Conducting Competition, the 12 selected candidates will be leading the Geneva Chamber Orchestra. Each candidate will have 45 minutes to run through an excerpt from Stravinsky’s Danses concertantes and work on excerpts from Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings and Wagner's Siegfried Idyll, selected by random draw.
