Kwame Brathwaite spielte in den 1960er Jahren eine wichtige Rolle bei der Popularisierung des Mottos "Black is Beautiful". Er war Mitbegründer des Kollektivs African Jazz-Art Society & Studios (AJASS), das dazu beigetragen hat, eine autonome und militante schwarze Ästhetik zu fördern. Brathwaite nutzte die Fotografie unter anderem, um den schwarzen Körper frei und positiv darzustellen, indem er die Hautfarbe und die afroamerikanische kulturelle Identität feierte, die stark von der afroamerikanischen Musik beeinflusst war, insbesondere Jazz, Soul und dann Funk.
Er hat mit Plattenfirmen zusammengearbeitet und Schallplattencover für Künstler wie Abbey Lincoln und Max Roach gemacht. Er wurde auch der offizielle Fotograf von Stevie Wonder und der Band The Stylistics.
Seine Arbeit war Teil einer größeren Bewegung in der Gemeinde, insbesondere am Marcus Garvey Day, der seit 1965 in Harlem gefeiert wird.

Kwame Brathwaite played a major role in popularizing the slogan "Black is Beautiful" in the 1960s. He co-founded the collective African Jazz-Art Society & Studios (AJASS), which helped to promote an autonomous and militant black aesthetic. Brathwaite notably used photography to represent the black body in a free and positive way, celebrating skin color and African-American cultural identity, strongly influenced by African-American music, including jazz, soul then funk.
He has collaborated with record labels and made vinyl sleeves for artists such as Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach. He also became the photographer of record for Stevie Wonder and The Stylistics.
His work was part of a broader community movement, notably during the Marcus Garvey Day, celebrated in Harlem since 1965.

Kwame Brathwaite ha giocato un ruolo importante nella diffusione dello slogan "Black is Beautiful" negli anni '60. Ha co-fondato il collettivo African Jazz-Art Society & Studios (AJASS), che ha contribuito a valorizzare un'estetica nera autonoma e militante. Il a cofondé le collectif African Jazz-Art Society & Studios (AJASS), qui a contribué à valoriser une esthétique noire autonome et militante. Brathwaite a notamment utilisé la photographie pour représenter le corps noir de manière libre et positive, célébrant la couleur de peau et l’identité culturelle afro-américaine, fortement influencée par la musique afro-américaine, notamment le jazz, la soul puis le funk.
Il a collaboré avec des maisons de disques et a réalisé des pochettes de vinyles pour des artistes tels qu’Abbey Lincoln et Max Roach. Il est également devenu le photographe attitré de Stevie Wonder et du groupe The Stylistics.
Son travail s’est inscrit dans un mouvement communautaire plus large, notamment lors du Marcus Garvey Day, célébré à Harlem depuis 1965.
