Approaching the idea of post-apocalyptic life through a poignant and wistful lens, Practical Effects follows a primate-like biomimetic robot who, as the last being left on Earth, has been tasked with the care and upkeep of a garden filled with intricately sculpted topiary animals.
Devoid of human, animal, or mechanical contact, the colorful but weather-worn robot can only find companionship in the manicured topiary figures it cares for, putting forth a strange and tragicomic vision of how the organic and inorganic worlds might eventually collide and support one another in unexpected ways.
The title of the artwork Practical Effects refers to the cinematic art of creating analog special effects without the use of digital enhancements or other post-production techniques. Thater drew inspiration from the 1972 cult science-fiction film Silent Running, which explored the idea of robots as gardeners and gathered critical praise for its unique use of costumes and practical effects to characterize these possibly sentient beings. In turn, Thater collaborated with notable Hollywood costume house Michael Schmidt Studios to design and build the robot in Practical Effects. Thater and Schmidt employed similar strategies in the design of their films’ mechanical protagonist, bringing a crucial, irreplicable sense of humanity and soulfulness to its movements and gestures.

Abordant à travers un regard poignant et nostalgique l’idée d’une vie postapocalyptique, Practical Effects suit un robot-primate biomimétique qui, en tant que dernier être vivant sur Terre, a été chargé de prendre soin d’un jardin rempli d’animaux finement sculptés dans la végétation.
Privé de tout contact humain, animal ou mécanique, le robot coloré mais usé par les éléments ne peut trouver de la compagnie que dans les figures topiaires manucurées dont il s’occupe, mettant en avant une vision étrange et tragicomique de la façon dont les mondes organique et inorganique pourraient un jour entrer en collision, et se soutenir mutuellement de manières inattendues.
Le titre de l’œuvre, Practical Effects, fait référence à l’art cinématographique consistant à créer des effets spéciaux analogiques sans recourir à des améliorations numériques ou à d’autres techniques de postproduction. Thater s’est inspirée du film culte de science-fiction Silent Running (1972), mettant en scène des robots jardiniers, qui a été salué par la critique pour son usage unique de costumes et d’« effets pratiques » permettant de caractériser ces êtres potentiellement sensibles. À son tour, Thater a collaboré avec la célèbre maison de costumes hollywoodienne Michael Schmidt Studios pour concevoir et construire le robot dans Practical Effects. Thater et Schmidt ont employé des stratégies similaires dans la conception du protagoniste mécanique de leurs films, en insufflant à ses mouvements et ses gestes une humanité et une spiritualité cruciales et irréplicables.
