Monasterial gardens belong to the oldest kind of historic parks and gardens also on the territory of Bratislava. The history of the Franciscan order in our city goes to the half of the 13th century when they established their early Gothic church and monastery here. This Franciscan church was consecrated in 1291 during the presence of the Hungarian king Ondrej III. Also the monasterial garden belonged to the complex of Franciscan church and monastery. After the year 1291, the Gothic town with the city walls was created. Franciscan monastery with the church and garden were included in the Gothic town. The spacious Franciscan garden was surrounded by a stone fence. We do not have any written evidence from the early Middle Ages how gardens looked like at that time. According to some old documents we know that in 1457 the big repair of the stone fence took place. The role of this fence was not only to prevent the free entrance and view to the garden but also it created the complexity of the monasterial complex. The stone fence also helps to keep the heat, had a role like a windbreak and protected the micro-climate conditions of the garden. Franciscans planted not only the vegetables and fruits in the garden but also some herbs which they used for healing purposes.
