It is to the concert, and not to the liturgy, that Brahms intended his German Requiem. Written in German rather than Latin, the work bears the imprint of a double loss suffered by Johannes Brahms: that of his friend Robert Schumann in 1856 and that of his mother in 1865.
It is neither solemn nor funeral, but rather intimate and personal, as the texts of the fifth movement attest: «Like a man who comforts his mother, so I will console you». Brahms chooses texts in the Bible with a universal purpose: more than a mass of the dead, he offers us a meditation on the meaning of life. Moreover, he had thought to title his work «Human Requiem» rather than «German Requiem».
Hell is over after that. I have devoted myself to the noble task of making this immortal piece a pleasure for those who like to play in duet. Now this work cannot perish.” This is how Brahms expressed himself when he completed the version for four-handed piano in 1869, which will be presented on the occasion of the Belles Sorties.

C’est au concert, et non à la liturgie, que Brahms destine son Requiem Allemand. Écrite en allemand plutôt qu’en latin, l’œuvre porte l’empreinte d’une double perte que subit Johannes Brahms : celle de son ami Robert Schumann en 1856, puis celle de sa mère en 1865.
Elle n’est ni solennelle ni funèbre, mais plutôt intime et personnelle, comme en témoignent les textes du cinquième mouvement : « Comme un homme que console sa mère, ainsi je vous consolerai ». Brahms choisit dans la Bible des textes au propos universel : plus qu’une messe des morts, il nous propose une méditation sur le sens de la vie. D’ailleurs, il avait pensé intituler son œuvre « Requiem humain » plutôt que « Requiem allemand ».
« L'enfer est fini après cela. Je me suis consacré à la noble tâche de faire aussi de cette pièce immortelle un plaisir pour ceux qui aiment jouer en duo. Maintenant, cette œuvre ne peut plus périr. » Ainsi s’exprime Brahms quand il en achève en 1869 la version pour piano à quatre mains, qui sera présentée à l’occasion des Belles Sorties.

Het is aan het concert, en niet aan de liturgie, dat Brahms zijn Duitse Requiem bedoelde. Geschreven in het Duits in plaats van in het Latijn, draagt het werk de opdruk van een dubbel verlies geleden door Johannes Brahms: Dat van zijn vriend Robert Schumann in 1856 en dat van zijn moeder in 1865.
Het is niet plechtig noch begrafenis, maar eerder intiem en persoonlijk, zoals de teksten van de vijfde beweging bevestigen: «Als een man die zijn moeder troost, dus ik zal u troosten». Brahms kiest teksten in de Bijbel met een universeel doel: Meer dan een massa doden biedt hij ons een meditatie aan over de betekenis van het leven. Bovendien had hij overwogen zijn werk «Human Requiem» te noemen in plaats van «German Requiem».
Daarna is de hel voorbij. Ik heb mezelf gewijd aan de nobele taak om van dit onsterfelijke stuk een genot te maken voor degenen die graag in duet spelen. Dit werk kan nu niet vergaan." Dit is hoe Brahms zich uitdrukte toen hij in 1869 de versie voor vierhandige piano afmaakte, die ter gelegenheid van de Belles sorties zal worden gepresenteerd.
