Gabriel Alvarez or the art of uncorking only great wines. As here, with the jubilant "Grande beuverie" by the very witty René Daumal. The language indulges in strange contortions while the author flushes out charlatans of all stripes.
For those who stagger, he is not bad company. Here then is a cenacle of friends animated by the same thirst, for drink as well as for senses: from laborious dialogues to perorations without tail or head, they are like atoms subjected to furious contrary forces. At the great ball of confusion, everyone has their say, their final sentence, their little idea on the best way to make the world go round. A narrator invites us to follow the fine team as they try to extricate themselves from the grip of alcohol. But there is a catch, it is worth saying it: other existential abysses await them where artists, scientists and politicians reign with impunity. A reinterpretation of the circles of Dante's Inferno, declined in an alcoholic mode and crossed to the rhythm of a language which, like the mouth that follows memorable drinking binges, is of the best wood.

A la santé des fâcheux !
Gabriel Alvarez ou l’art de ne déboucher que de grands crus. Comme ici, avec la jubilatoire «Grande beuverie» du très spirituel René Daumal. La langue s’y livre à d’étranges contorsions tandis que l’auteur débusque les charlatans de tous bords.
Pour qui titube, il n’est pas de mauvaise compagnie. Voici donc un cénacle d’amis qu’anime une même soif, de boissons comme de sens. De dialogues laborieux en péroraisons sans queue ni tête, ils sont semblables à des atomes soumis à de furieuses forces contraires. Au grand bal de la confusion, chacun à son mot à dire, sa sentence définitive, sa petite idée sur la meilleure manière de faire tourner le monde. Un·e narrateur·trice nous invite à suivre la fine équipe tandis que cette dernière tente de s’extraire de l’emprise de l’alcool. Mais il y a un hic, c’est le cas de le dire: d’autres gouffres existentiels les attendent où règnent impunément artistes, scientifiques et politiciens. Une relecture des cercles de l’Enfer de Dante, déclinés sur le mode éthylique et franchis au rythme d’une langue qui, comme la gueule qui suit les beuveries mémorables, est du meilleur bois.
