Everyone knows the great painters of the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries: Rembrandt, Vermeer, Titian, Rubens, Bruegel, Turner, Van Gogh, Degas—the list goes on.
But where were the female artists? Were women incapable of making art? Or were they there all along—and if so, why don’t we know their names?
In this lecture, Debbie explores why so many women in art history remain hidden and the systematic ways in which men attempted to erase them. She places historical developments in context and sheds light on the legacy that these women continue to carry to this day.

Mais où étaient les femmes artistes ? Étaient-elles incapables de créer ? Ou étaient-elles présentes depuis toujours, et si oui, pourquoi leurs noms ont-ils été si souvent effacés de l’histoire de l’art ?
Dans cette conférence, Debbie Nijland explore les raisons pour lesquelles tant de femmes artistes sont restées invisibles, ainsi que les mécanismes qui ont contribué à leur effacement. Elle replace cette histoire dans son contexte et met en lumière l’héritage que ces femmes continuent de porter aujourd’hui.

In deze lezing onderzoekt Debbie waarom zoveel vrouwelijke kunstenaars uit de kunstgeschiedenis verborgen zijn gebleven en op welke systematische manieren zij uit het verhaal zijn gewist. Ze plaatst deze ontwikkelingen in hun historische context en laat zien welke erfenis deze vrouwen nog altijd met zich meedragen.
