Claude Monet is known worldwide for its landscapes, its quest for light and its major role in the history of Impressionism. His paintings also constitute a valuable source for understanding fashion, the uses and elegance of the second half of the 19th century.
Through the works of Claude Monet and several impressionist painters, this conference invites you to discover the evolution of women’s fashion between 1860 and 1880. Crinolines, turnings, cashmere shawls, Japanese influences, accessories, promenade or reception outfits reveal the tastes, uses and transformations of a society in full mutation.
Between the history of art and the history of costume, discover how the works of the Impressionists today allow a better understanding of 19th century fashion and everyday life.
This conference is based on the research of Lucile Daubercies, a student at the Ecole du Louvre, specializing in the history of fashion, clothing and textiles, carried out as part of a master’s internship at the University of Paris Nanterre. This project is supported by the association Les Amis de Claude Monet in Vétheuil, at the initiative of its president, Claire Vincent.
