Looking for the Masters in Ricardo’s Golden Shoes is a collaboration between an artist intrigued by the evolution of photography and her charismatic friend, Ricardo, who becomes both his muse and model. Started in July 2013 during the visit of the Rencontres d'Arles as a joyful celebration of the photographers exhibited that year, the project quickly developed into a reflection on the evolution of the expression of photographic portraiture.
Catherine Balet was interested in what gives a photograph its iconic status, at a time when a continuous stream of images is frantically consumed every day. Fascinated by the way the internet has decontextualized images and diminished our ability to pay attention to what we see online, the photographer has closely analyzed the images that have built the foundations of our photographic visual culture.
Complicit in this process, Ricardo slips into the skin of a woman or a young boy with natural elegance. Together, he and Catherine Balet revisit the photographs of the Masters in a way that not only respects the original authors but also transposes the very essence of photography by aspiring to translate the beauty of the grain and the strength of every detail.
With this work, Catherine Balet explores the vast repertoire of advanced image processing technologies in a way that questions the medium itself. Opened with the first self-portrait dated 1839, the series seeks to give meaning to the photographic landscape of the 21st century by examining its past.
