22nd Festival of the Imagination / Yakshagana Gombeyata
Yakshagana Gombeyata
Puppets with sons(thread) of Karnataka by the company Uppinakudru
In Uppinakudru, small village of the state of Karnataka, puppets with sons(thread) in the wooden body and covered with cloths in the brilliant colours dance dramas of the gods of India in front of temples at the time of seasonal parties(holidays). They are called yakshagana (singing(song) of the celestial beings) and, for the XVIIth century, carried by a quite unique troop, that of the family Kamath. With a grace(favour) and an amazing virtuosity, puppets dance on the stage(scene) to the rhythm of drums, jump on horseback, fly in the air and fight(dispute) in the sword or in the lance. Although the directory scoops(draws) out from the sacred texts of Hinduism as Râmayâna, joke always stays present thanks to the buffoons(clowns) and to the tomfooleries of the monkeys. A colorful show, full of humor and poetry.
