Was wäre, wenn das choreografische Schreiben den Beweis für Machtmissbrauch und staatliche Gewalt liefern könnte? Dies ist die Prämisse von Tania El Khoury im Verlauf einer Installation-Performance, die Texte, Videos, Dokumente und eine Live-Performance auf der Grundlage einer Bewegungspartitur kombiniert. Die libanesische Künstlerin dokumentiert darin spezifische Fälle von Repression, deren systemischen Charakter sie aufzeigt.
Mit Choreography of State betrachtet Tania El Khoury die Choreografie als eine Form der Analyse, die es ihr ermöglicht, ein Schema zu aktualisieren: das, was als eine Reihe isolierter und zufälliger Fälle staatlicher Gewalt wahrgenommen wird, wird in Wirklichkeit nach einer berechneten Dramaturgie konzipiert und wiederholt. Zu diesem Zweck sammelt der Künstler die verschiedenen Formen, in denen die Choreografie notiert und archiviert wird - beschreibende oder poetische Texte, schematische Zeichnungen, Bewegungsanalysesysteme, Video - und verwendet sie, um ein und denselben Vorfall zu kommentieren. Im Raum der Installation koexistiert die Ausstrahlung dieser Elemente auf einem Bildschirm mit der Aufführung, wodurch das Publikum in eine Beobachterposition versetzt und wachsam ist.
Dieses Projekt ist das neue Kapitel in einem Werk, das - seit über zehn Jahren - die Interaktivität mit dem Publikum bearbeitet und den Machtmissbrauch sichtbar macht, der unser tägliches und politisches Leben prägt. Tania El Khoury hat sich beispielsweise mit geschlechtsspezifischer Gewalt in Maybe If You Choreograph Me, You Will Feel Better (2011) oder der politischen Instrumentalisierung des libanesischen Stromnetzes in The Search for Power (2018) beschäftigt. Für Choreography of State stützt sie sich unter anderem auf Berichte aus der ägyptischen Revolution, als Aktivisten vermuteten, dass die sexuelle Gewalt vom Staat organisiert wurde. Im Laufe seiner Aktivierung in verschiedenen Städten und Ländern wird das Projekt - in Zusammenarbeit mit lokalen Künstlern und Aktivisten - angepasst, um spezifische Fälle von Repression zu dokumentieren und so ein kollektives Gedächtnis der staatlichen Gewalt mit der Sprache der Bewegung zu schaffen.

What if choreographic writing could produce evidence of abuse of power and state violence? This is the postulate of Tania El Khoury over an installation-performance combining texts, videos, documents and live performance based on a movement score. The Lebanese artist documents specific cases of repression, whose systemic nature she demonstrates.
With Choreography of State, Tania El Khoury approaches choreography as a form of analysis, which allows her to update a pattern: what is perceived as a set of isolated and accidental instances of state violence is in fact conceptualized and repeated according to calculated dramaturgy. For this, the artist brings together the different forms in which choreography is recorded and archived – descriptive or poetic texts, schematic drawings, systems of movement analysis, video – and uses them to annotate the same incident. In the space of the installation, the diffusion of these elements on a screen coexists with the performance, placing the audience in the position of witness, in a situation of vigilance.
This project is the new chapter of a work that – for more than ten years – has been working on interactivity with the public and making visible the abuses of power that shape our daily lives and politics. Tania El Khoury has thus addressed gender violence in Maybe If You Choreograph Me, You Will Feel Better (2011) or the political instrumentalization of the Lebanese electricity grid with The Search for Power (2018). For Choreography of State, she is inspired in particular by testimonies collected during the Egyptian revolution, where activists suspected that mass sexual violence was organized by the state. As it activates in different cities and countries, the project will be adapted – in collaboration with local artists and activists – to document specific cases of repression and thus create a collective memory of state violence, with the language of movement.

Tania El Khoury creates performances and installations that focus on the interaction with the public, and is interested in the ethical and political potential of these encounters. His work has been translated into many languages and offered in 32 countries. She has also received several awards, including: the 2019 Soros Art Fellow, the title of Outstanding Production from the Bessie Award, the International Living Art Prize, the Total Theatre Innovation Award and the Arches Brick Award.
Tania El Khoury holds a PhD in Performance Studies from the Royal Holloway, University of London. She was invited as a festival director at Bard College of the Fisher Center for Performing Arts.
In 2018, a survey of her work entitled Ear-whispered: works by Tania El Khoury was conducted in Philadelphia. Tania is associated with the artists' collective of the Forest Fringe in the UK, and is also co-founder of the group Dictaphone in Lebanon, a research and performance collective aiming to question our relationship to the city, and to redefine its public space.
In April and May 2026, she benefited from the Chaillot Fabrique initiative, a creative residency supported by the BNP Paribas Foundation.

Con Choreography of State, Tania El Khoury affronta la coreografia come una forma di analisi che le permette di aggiornare uno schema: quello che viene percepito come un insieme di casi isolati e accidentali di violenza perpetrata dallo Stato è in realtà concettualizzato e ripetuto secondo una drammaturgia calcolata. Per questo, l'artista raccoglie le diverse forme in cui la coreografia è annotata e archiviata - testi descrittivi o poetici, disegni schematici, sistemi di analisi del movimento, video - e le utilizza per annotare uno stesso incidente. Nello spazio dell'installazione, la diffusione di questi elementi su uno schermo coesiste con la performance, mettendo il pubblico in posizione di testimone, in situazione di vigilanza.
Questo progetto è il nuovo capitolo di un'opera che - da oltre dieci anni - lavora l'interattività con il pubblico e rende visibili gli abusi di potere che plasmano la nostra vita quotidiana e politica. Tania El Khoury ha affrontato la violenza di genere in Maybe If You Choreograph Me, You Will Feel Better (2011) o la strumentalizzazione politica della rete elettrica libanese con The Search for Power (2018). Per Choreography of State, si basa in particolare su testimonianze raccolte durante la rivoluzione egiziana, quando gli attivisti sospettavano che le violenze sessuali di massa fossero organizzate dallo stato. Nel corso della sua attivazione in diverse città e paesi, il progetto sarà adattato - in collaborazione con artisti e attivisti locali - per documentare casi specifici di repressione e creare così una memoria collettiva della violenza statale, insieme al linguaggio del movimento.

Avec Choreography of State, Tania El Khoury aborde la chorégraphie comme une forme d’analyse, qui lui permet de mettre à jour un schéma : ce qui est perçu comme un ensemble de cas isolés et accidentels de violence perpétrée par l’État est en réalité conceptualisé et répété selon une dramaturgie calculée. Pour cela, l’artiste rassemble les différentes formes sous lesquelles la chorégraphie est notée et archivée – textes descriptifs ou poétiques, dessins schématiques, systèmes d’analyse du mouvement, vidéo – et les utilise pour annoter un même incident. Dans l’espace de l’installation, la diffusion de ces éléments sur un écran coexiste avec la performance, plaçant le public en position de témoin, en situation de vigilance.
Ce projet est le nouveau chapitre d’une œuvre qui – depuis plus de dix ans – travaille l’interactivité avec le public et rend visibles les abus de pouvoir qui façonnent nos vies quotidiennes et politiques. Tania El Khoury a ainsi abordé les violences de genre dans Maybe If You Choreograph Me, You Will Feel Better (2011) ou l’instrumentalisation politique du réseau électrique libanais avec The Search for Power (2018). Pour Choreography of State, elle s’inspire notamment de témoignages recueillis pendant la révolution égyptienne, où des activistes soupçonnaient que les violences sexuelles de masse étaient organisées par l'État. Au fil de son activation dans différentes villes et pays, le projet sera adapté – en collaboration avec des artistes et activistes locaux – pour documenter des cas spécifiques de répression et créer ainsi une mémoire collective de la violence étatique, avec le langage du mouvement.

Este es el postulado de Tania El Khoury a lo largo de una instalación-performance que combina textos, videos, documentos y actuaciones en vivo basadas en una partitura de movimientos. La artista libanesa documenta casos específicos de represión, cuyo carácter sistémico demuestra.
Con Choreography of State, Tania El Khoury aborda la coreografía como una forma de análisis que le permite actualizar un esquema: lo que se percibe como un conjunto de casos aislados y accidentales de violencia perpetrada por el Estado es en realidad conceptualizado y repetido según una dramaturgia calculada. Para ello, el artista reúne las diferentes formas en las que la coreografía está anotada y archivada -textos descriptivos o poéticos, dibujos esquemáticos, sistemas de análisis del movimiento, vídeo- y las utiliza para anotar un mismo incidente. En el espacio de la instalación, la difusión de estos elementos sobre una pantalla coexiste con la actuación, situando al público en posición de testigo, en situación de vigilancia.
