The art of espalier in the vegetable orchards of the castle of Montigny-sur-Aube
The castle, enclosed by walls on nearly 4 hectares, consists of a vast English park on its southern facade, created in the nineteenth century. It is classified as a historical monument and populated with many boxwood and topiary.
An orchard, also walled, is focused on the know-how of gardeners in the nineteenth century. Labeled «Remarkable garden», it includes a very large selection of fruit trees in espaliers and other forms (more than 200 varieties including: apple, pear, peach, apricot, nectarine, heather, cherry, quince, and selection of vine varieties in the form of trellises).
Each tree is numbered, and its arboreal, taste and historical peculiarities (if possible) are revealed, in French and English, thanks to an audio guide program handed out to visitors.
Backed by the orangery, a heat chamber, listed in the additional inventory, houses a selection of 7 varieties of fig trees, also in espaliers.
Finally, a large «productive» vegetable garden of 3,000 m², located near the castle grounds, is accessible to visitors.
In the orangery, a small exhibition is held on the know-how of 19th century gardeners and the associated trades.
On the occasion of this event, take advantage of the advice of our chef-gardener.
