Paul Déplaude, member of the association Patrimoine en Pays Mornantais (PPM), introduces us to an exceptional richness of our vernacular heritage, the walls and dry stone constructions present in our territory.
Since the Neolithic, dry stone has been extracted on site to define fields, develop well-exposed cultivable surfaces, contain newly domesticated animals, manage water resources, protect roads and many other uses.
These books were amplified at the beginning of the industrial revolution in order to feed a growing population, especially here.
These constructions are the expression of a true vernacular art of peasant-masons. Moreover, the art of dry stone has been listed as intangible heritage by UNESCO since 2018.
Also, the PPM association had the ambition at the beginning of 2023 to take up the challenge of saving this heritage from the fatal decline it seems destined for through an unprecedented mobilization, and thus contribute to strengthening the attractiveness of our landscapes.
This project will be developed during this conference.

Acquired in 1982, with the help of the Conseil Général du Rhône and the Conseil Régional Rhône Alpes, the Maison d'Expositions de l'ARAIRE welcomed its first visitors in 1983 with the exhibition on rural architecture in the Monts du Lyonnais. Nine years later, the exhibition room on the Roman aqueducts of Lyon and the screening room were inaugurated. In 1995, the last two rooms were restored and opened to the public.
In the heart of the Monts du Lyonnais, on the edge of the village of Yzeron, at the northeast point of the rocky outcrop that dominates the Yzeron valley, La Maison de l'ARAIRE enjoys a privileged location.
Starting from the village square, you arrive in a few hundred meters, by the Cascade road, to the House. In front of you, at number 23, we discover a large building extended on its right by a high stone wall, interrupted by a gate with Lyonnaise cornice. The portal opens onto a terraced courtyard planted with two century-old trees, a linden and a chestnut tree.
