The MEG is teaming up with El Elegante for a musical evening based around the temporary exhibition ‘Afrosonica – Soundscapes’.
Founder of the first picó* installed in Paris, ‘El Elegante, la maquina del ritmo’. Originally from Cartagena, she was raised on the warm rhythms of the Colombian Caribbean coast. Her 100% vinyl sets evoke nostalgia for a time when all it took was a picó (or sound system) on the street corner to create a neighbourhood party or verbena. Her inspiration comes from the street, from uninhibited, no-frills celebrations. From her love for popular music of yesterday and today, dancing barefoot to the rhythm of good salsa, charanga, merengue, soukous, highlife, cumbia, bullerengue, boogaloo and other Afro-rooted, Latin-folk Latin/Afro-jazz genres.
*Picó are customised sound systems in the working-class neighbourhoods of the Colombian Caribbean coast. Walls of sound to liven up free parties or verbenas (block parties). The El Elegante evening highlights the connection between Africa and the Caribbean: Latin grooves, Afro-Caribbean psychedelia & vintage tropicalism.

Le MEG s’associe à El Elegante pour une soirée musicale autour de l’exposition temporaire « Afrosonica – Paysages sonores ».
Fondatrice du premier picó* installé à Paris « El Elegante, la maquina del ritmo ». Originaire de Cartagena, elle a été bercée par les rythmes chaleureux de la côte caraïbe colombienne. Ses sets 100% vinyle, appellent à la nostalgie des temps où il suffisait d’un picó (ou sound system) au coin de la rue pour créer une fête de quartier ou verbena. Son inspiration vient de la rue, d’une fête décomplexée et sans chichis. De l’amour qu’elle porte pour la musique populaire d’hier et d’aujourd’hui, de danser les pieds nus au rythme d’une bonne salsa, charanga, merengue, soukous, highlife, cumbia, bullerengue, boogaloo et d’autres afro-rooted, latin-folk latin/afro-jazz genres.
*Picó ce sont des sound systems customisés dans les quartiers populaires de la côte caraïbe colombienne. Des murs de son pour égayer les free party ou verbenas (block party). La soirée El Elegante met en avant la connexion Afrique Caraïbes : latin grooves, afro-caraïbe psychedelia & tropicalism-vintage.
