Rinus Van de Velde (1983, Leuven; lives and works in Antwerp) has achieved important milestones in the development of his work in recent years.
While he was mainly known for his monumental charcoal drawings at the beginning of his career, today he stands out as a complete artist, who juggles with different media: drawing, sculptures, installations and cinema.
Van de Velde’s work plays on the tension between reality and fiction to create a complex universe where documentation and fiction, reproduction and reconstruction are inextricably linked. His works are characterized by a particularly complex stratification, obtained, among other things, through the combination of a careful composition and structure, countless references to the artistic world, a sharp irony, a visual intelligence, biographical elements and an overactive imagination. Van de Velde depicts an alternative world, where the myths of literature, art and cinema constantly permeate the reality of his personality and artistic practice, presenting a story that does not tell the truth, but a carefully arranged lie. In his drawings, which form the heart of his work, he creates a multiverse composed of several plots in which he distorts his real life into a fictional autobiography. He systematically mixes reality with his imagination, and gives himself the freedom to appropriate everything that enters his universe. With the alter egos he creates, he slips into the skin of different characters and explores worlds that do not belong to him (yet). All these universes have a common anchor: the artist himself. Through imitations, carefully crafted lies and appropriation mechanisms, he draws closer with each work to the hidden truth about his identity and art.
For Abby, Van de Velde was inspired by the cloister of Groeninghe Abbey and the museum’s collection. The Living being the museum’s first meeting space, Van de Velde wanted visitors to be able to get to know the collection in peace, which will include a new charcoal drawing by the artist. Like the sets of his films, that of this living room was developed and designed in every detail. Every chair, plant, table and sofa has been identically recreated in cardboard, wood and paint. All invite the visitor to take an active part in the world of Rinus Van de Velde.

Rinus Van de Velde (°1983, Louvain ; vit et travaille à Anvers) a franchi des étapes importantes dans le développement de son œuvre ces dernières années.
Alors qu’il était principalement connu pour ses dessins monumentaux au fusain au début de sa carrière, il s’impose aujourd’hui comme un artiste complet, qui jongle avec différents médias : dessin, sculptures, installations et cinéma.
L’œuvre de Van de Velde joue sur la tension entre la réalité et la fiction pour créer un univers complexe où la documentation et la fiction, la reproduction et la reconstruction sont inextricablement liées. Ses œuvres se caractérisent par une stratification particulièrement complexe, obtenue, entre autres, par la combinaison d’une composition et d’une structure soignées, d’innombrables références au monde artistique, d’une ironie acérée, d’une intelligence visuelle, d’éléments biographiques et d’une imagination débordante. Van de Velde dépeint un monde alternatif, où les mythes de la littérature, de l’art et du cinéma imprègnent constamment la réalité de sa personnalité et de sa pratique artistiques, en présentant une histoire qui ne raconte pas la vérité, mais un mensonge soigneusement arrangé. Dans ses dessins, qui forment le cœur de son œuvre, il crée un multivers composé de plusieurs intrigues dans lesquelles il déforme sa vie réelle pour en faire une autobiographie fictionnelle. Il mêle systématiquement la réalité à son imagination, et s’octroie la liberté de s’approprier tout ce qui pénètre dans son univers. Avec les alter ego qu’il crée, il se glisse dans la peau de différents personnages et explore des mondes qui ne lui appartiennent pas (encore). Tous ces univers ont un point d’ancrage commun : l’artiste lui-même. Par le biais d’imitations, de mensonges soigneusement élaborés et de mécanismes d’appropriation, il se rapproche à chaque œuvre de la vérité cachée sur son identité et son art.
Pour Abby, Van de Velde s’est inspiré du cloître de l’abbaye de Groeninghe et de la collection du musée. Le Living étant le premier espace de rencontre du musée, Van de Velde a voulu que les visiteurs puissent y faire tranquillement connaissance avec la collection, qui comprendra un nouveau dessin au fusain de l’artiste. À l’instar des décors de ses films, celui de ce salon a été élaboré et conçu dans le moindre détail. Chaque chaise, chaque plante, chaque table et chaque canapé a été recréé à l’identique en carton, en bois et en peinture. Tous invitent le visiteur à prendre activement part à l’univers de Rinus Van de Velde.

Rinus van de Velde (°1983, Leuven; Woont en werkt in Antwerpen) heeft de afgelopen jaren belangrijke stappen gezet in de ontwikkeling van zijn werk.
Hoewel hij aan het begin van zijn carrière vooral bekend was om zijn monumentale houtskooltekeningen, is hij nu een complete kunstenaar, die met verschillende media samenwerkt: Tekenen, sculpturen, installaties en cinema.
Het werk van van de Velde speelt op de spanning tussen werkelijkheid en fictie om een complex universum te creëren waar documentatie en fictie, reproductie en reconstructie onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden zijn. Zijn werken worden gekenmerkt door een bijzonder complexe stratificatie, verkregen onder andere door de combinatie van zorgvuldige compositie en structuur, ontelbare verwijzingen naar de artistieke wereld, scherpe ironie, visuele intelligentie, biografische elementen en een overvolle verbeelding. Van de Velde beeldt een alternatieve wereld uit, waarin literatuur, kunst en film voortdurend doordringen in de werkelijkheid van zijn persoonlijkheid en artistieke praktijk, en brengt een verhaal dat niet de waarheid vertelt, maar een zorgvuldig gearrangeerde leugen. In zijn tekeningen, die het hart vormen van zijn werk, creëert hij een multiversum samengesteld uit verschillende percelen waarin hij zijn echte leven vervormt tot een fictieve autobiografie. Hij mengt systematisch de werkelijkheid met zijn verbeelding en geeft zichzelf de vrijheid om alles wat in zijn universum binnendringt, te gebruiken. Met het alter ego dat hij creëert, glijdt hij in de huid van verschillende personages en verkent hij werelden die (nog) niet van hem zijn. Al deze universa hebben een gemeenschappelijk ankerpunt: De kunstenaar zelf. Door middel van imitaties, zorgvuldig gemaakte leugens en toeëigeningsmechanismen benadert hij elk werk naar de verborgen waarheid over zijn identiteit en kunst
Voor Abby is van de Velde geïnspireerd door het klooster van de Groeninghe Abdij en de collectie van het museum. Als eerste ontmoetingsplaats van het museum wilde van de Velde dat bezoekers rustig kennis konden maken met de collectie, die een nieuwe houtskooltekening van de kunstenaar zal bevatten. Net als de sets van zijn films, werd de film voor deze show uitgewerkt en ontworpen in elk detail. Elke stoel, elke plant, elke tafel en elke bank is op identieke wijze nagemaakt in karton, hout en verf. Allen nodigen de bezoeker uit om actief deel te nemen aan de wereld van Rinus van de Velde.
