Free visit of the Citadel
Between Provence and Dauphiné, overlooking the cluse where the Durance flows, the Citadel of Sisteron bars the sky, crowns the city of its walls, its bastions, its keep.
The view is striking, over 150 km, it offers the most beautiful view of Haute Provence. A listed historic monument spanning 10 hectares, it bears eight centuries of architecture and history. Keep and walkway, built on the narrow rocky spine, date from the thirteenth century, the terracing of bastioned walls of the sixteenth century. Of the project of Vauban, designed in 1692, only the powder magazine was carried out. Major alterations were made on the north face in the middle of the 19th century. It was at this time that the magnificent underground staircase linking the fortress to the city was dug into the rock. Deeply wounded by the bombing of August 1944, the Citadel is today beautifully restored and invites you to visit.
