Visit of the exhibition "From the abyss to the cosmos" at Fort Napoleon
Exhibition at Fort Napoleon in La Seyne-sur-Mer, from 15 September to 8 October 2023
Fort Napoleon, located in a green setting overlooking the harbor of Toulon, «Des abysses au cosmos» is a didactic exhibition that will plunge its visitors, more than 2400 meters, off La Seyne-sur-Mer on the infrastructure "Laboratoire Sous-marin Provence Méditerranée", revealing the challenges and innovations that enable the study of cosmic particles (ANTARES and KM3NeT submarine neutrino telescopes) and the deep marine environment (EMSO). This exhibition, with a program of scientific and technical cultural actions addressing a wide audience is organized, at Fort Napoleon, by the Center of Particle Physics of Marseille and the Town Hall of La Seyne-sur-Mer, with its scientific and industrial partners as well as artists. From 15 September to 8 October 2023, between the “European Heritage Days” and the national event “Science Day”, and as part of the National Year of Physics 2023-2024, the public and schools will be able to discover cutting-edge research and technological developments in the field of physical and environmental sciences. This research was carried out with the underwater neutrino telescope, ANTARES, between 2001 and 2022, and continues with KM3NeT, the second generation of the neutrino detector. Combined with these projects, marine and environmental science sensors from the EMSO network enable continuous measurements of the marine environment. Located at 2450 meters deep, in the Mediterranean, about forty kilometers off La Seyne-sur-Mer, this infrastructure, managed by the Provence Méditerranée underwater laboratory, provides unique access to the abyss and is a world-class pole of attraction for the study of neutrinos and the marine environment.
