In Tourrettes, on the small departmental road 219 which crosses the village, the chapel of the Penitents, formerly called Notre Dame de Cavaroux, with its typical Provençal bell tower, was built by the monks of Lérins at XIV°. Attached to the cemetery, it was originally the tomb of the Lords of Tourrettes.
It became the chapel of the Brotherhood of White Penitents from the 17th century.
The penitents were laity, exclusively, representing all social strata.
Their charitable work of public assistance and distress management extends to the widest fields until the Revolution.
Each penitent wears a dress called "bag" usually attached to the hood that allows to work in anonymity.
Colour refers to a specific charitable action and recognized religious patronage.
