Visit free church St Martin - Le Bernard
Before the church there was a Gallo-Roman villa, around which a village was formed. The church is built on the same site, probably towards the end of the XI century, the oldest known mention of the building dating from 1105, where it is described as a «isolated building in the middle of a cemetery, built on the foundations of Gallo-Roman villa».
The church of the 11th or 12th century was rebuilt in the 14th or 15th century. In March 1568, the church was burned down by Protestants. Only the vaults resisted.
The oldest parts of the church date from the 12th century and are in Romanesque style with pointed barrel vaults supported by double arches. The transept cross, supporting the bell tower, is equipped with a Romanesque dome on pendants, like most churches of that period.
It is the only church of Vendée registered whose 5 altarpieces are classified.
