When it entered the prerogative of the dukes of Anjou, related to the crown of France in 1360, the former keep XII° embedded in its enclosure was almost completely destroyed to be transformed into a pleasure home by Louis d'Anjou (end XIV°), then by King René (1454 -1472\. Reinforced by an important bastioned enclosure shortly after the Edict of Nantes (1598), it served as barracks, then prison from XVII° to XIX° and underwent very mutilating reshuffs. Above the remains of the old castle XIII° (visible at the base of the towers and at the lower level of the courtyard), architecture and ornamentation are here at the peak of the finishing Gothic: lightening of the four corner towers (octagonal shape, buttresses veneered with edges, large openings), refined decoration of a great richness (openwork railings, inner sculpture), of which only a miniature of the Very Rich Hours of the Duke of Berry gives the overall image.
