About the location

Esplanade des Halles Gaztelu
Rue du Vieux Fort, 64700 Hendaye
  • Pyrénées-Atlantiques
  • Nouvelle-Aquitaine
The fort built by Louis XIV, from the fenced defensive tower designed by the engineer Poupard, was much more modest than the one imagined by the king’s engineer Jacques Alleaume when he came to Hendaye in August 1618\. Nevertheless, this fortress is part of the grand design of Louis XIV, both for him and his people. The city of Fontarabie is impressed and the Hendayais find relative peace. By the geopolitical explanations concerning this land of confines that is Hendaye, the period clothes and demonstrations relating to the construction of the fort, the visit of the remains proposed by Agora-Txingudi, allow a scenario and better understand the usefulness of this fortress.
