Église Saint-Roch-et-Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption
Le Bourg, 23500 Clairavaux
This 12th century church is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin and to Saint Roch.
It consists of a nave with three bays extended by a fourth forming the choir of Romanesque style. A side chapel was added in the 15th century.
The Renaissance-style portal has great originality, and is surmounted by a wall-belfry with a mullioned bay. Several graven funerary slabs of the Order of Malta’s Cross are located on the ground of the church as well as a monumental cross also classified. The church also features a superb 17th-century architectural wooden altarpiece with its tabernacle (classified as Historical Monuments) with a canvas depicting the Assumption of the Virgin. The double arch is decorated with murals and a «peasant» calendar. Two polychrome limestone statues, also classified, can be found in this building, as well as a set of polychrome wooden statues from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
