This visit offers you to observe from several points of view the heritage of Périgueux and to question the evolution of its knowledge and its preservation today.
Before starting development work on the Place de la Clautre, an archaeological diagnosis is necessary. The National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (INRAP) will exceptionally present you how current archaeological surveys are carried out on the site and what they can teach us. After this discovery of the basement of the Place de la Clautre, place of ancient burials, became historic market place of the city in the Middle Ages, the City of Art and History service invites you to climb on the roofs of the cathedral to take height to take a fresh look at the Périgueux heritage while questioning the way in which the urban development continues.

About the location

Cathédrale Saint-Front
Place de la Clautre, 24000 Périgueux
  • Dordogne
  • Nouvelle-Aquitaine
Seat of the diocese of Périgueux, the cathedral of Saint Front is first an oratory before becoming, in the 6th century, a church built on the tomb of Saint Front, combining the Merovingian and then Carolingian styles. It is in the eleventh century that the primary abbey church is equipped with its domes, extension realized with the aim of welcoming the pilgrims of the way to Compostela. It underwent further enlargements in the 14th and 16th centuries before obtaining the title of cathedral in 1669\. Restored by Paul Abadie in the 19th century, it is inspired by the Basilica of St Mark of Venice and the Church of the Holy Apostles of Constantinople. It is a Unesco World Heritage Site.
