Louis XV, at the instigation of the Paris brothers and Madame de Pompadour, set his sights on the plain of Grenelle, a former Garenne, which was part of the Sainte-Geneviève abbey and part of the Hôtel des Invalides in order to create a military school. Ange-Jacques Gabriel was chosen to design and ensure the construction of the buildings. In 1773, the work was completed. The royal courtyard is framed by porticoes with Doric columns on the ground floor and Ionic upstairs. The central body or castle dominates it without ostentation, decorated with colossal Corinthian columns and surmounted by a quadrangular dome.
