This machine, designed and built in 1868, following the decree of Napoleon III of 11 April 1866, contrasts by its technique with that of Trilbardou. It remained operational until the end of navigation on the canal, around 1962. It was classified as a historic monument in 1987. Its vertical turbines and pumps are currently maintained in working order and run most of the time during scheduled opening days. Thanks to its design, it could be automated and reused if necessary. It is the work of Louis-Dominique Girard.

The Villers-les-Rigault lift plant, like that of Trilbardou, is a pumping plant built under Napoleon III. Its role was to supplement the water supplies from the Ourcq canal with water withdrawals from the Marne. Louis-Dominique Girard, a hydraulician engineer also known for his work at the Menier chocolate factory in Noisiel, was the first to use the historic pumping machine in 1868\. The assembly consists of two 10 m diameter cast iron wheels, operating under a 2 m waterfall and operating four positive displacement pumps that can discharge 38 000 m³ of water per day. Although pumping is now carried out only in Trilbardou, the Girard machine, classified as a Historical Monument, offers an impressive testimony to the technological evolution of the nineteenth century in the field of the use of hydraulic energy.
