About the location

Musée du cloître de Notre-Dame-en-Vaux
Rue Nicolas Durand, 51000 Châlons-en-Champagne
  • Marne
  • Grand Est
Having joined with the north facade of the church of Notre-Dame-en-Vaux, monument today registered on the world heritage of the UNESCO, the cloister was built in years 1170-1180\. Destroyed in 1759 and 1766 by the canons and the parishioners who did not want to pay repairs any more, he falls into oblivion during the two centuries. Excavations(Searches) begun(undertaken) by Léon Pressouyre between 1963 and 1976 allow to rediscover and to bring three quarters to light of the elements of the cloister. They reveal a building of an exceptional iconographic wealth and of a big(great) decorative sumptuousness which establishes(constitutes) a major monument of the history(story) of the sculpture at that time of transition between Novel and Gothic. Statues-columns, decorative capitals(big tops) and historiés, cornices and pillars which trained(formed) this unique(only) set(group) are presented in a museum nearby immediate of the area of the old(former) cloister today. The property of this monument-museum was transferred in 2007 to the city of Châlons-en-Champagne.
