Do you think you know Vézelay? Have you ever been to the hermitage of La Cordelle?
Founded more than 800 years ago at the foot of the eternal hill by the Franciscans, the hermitage, still inhabited by the brothers, will be the subject of a major renovation project to perpetuate the spirit of the place: prayer, fraternal welcome and ecology.
The Franciscans welcome you for two exceptional guided tours that they will comment on themselves: discovery of the Chapel of the Holy Cross built in 1146 and the hermitage usually reserved for the community and retreatants (cloister, crypt, gardens, etc.)
Welcome to this place of peace and good!

About the location

Chapelle de la Cordelle
Chemin de la Cordelle 89450 Vézelay
  • Yonne
  • Bourgogne-Franche-Comté
Located on the north side of the hill of Vézelay, the hermitage of Cordelle shelters the chapel Sainte-Croix built by 1150 memorialising the predication of the second Crusade by Saint Bernard. It is in 1217 when two adherents of François d' Assise settle down to the hermitage of Cordelle (the Franciscans occupied the place up to French Revolution). Having sold as very National in 1791, Cordelle was transformed into stony career(quarry) at the beginning of the XIXth century. Entered in the heritage of the family of the counts of Chastellux from the start, these acquire(buy back) her(it) by 1840\. The old(former) convent found its religious vocation in 1949, when the Franciscans established a hermitage there. The brothers Franciscans always occupy the house.
