The castle of Oliferne is located at the top of the peak of Oliferne, at 807 m altitude. It overlooks Lake Coiselet, the confluence of Ain and Bienne, more than 500 m above sea level, with a 180° view of the valleys of Ain, Bienne and Valouse, Bugey, Haut Jura and, further on, Mont Blanc. Jean de Chalon built this castle, considered impregnable, around 1200\. It consisted of two parts: the high courtyard, at the top of the rocky peak, with the castle house, the stables, the keep and a cistern; below, the village, surrounded by a wall of enclosure more than 300 m long. In 1361, Thiébaud de Chauffour, leader of one of the bands of looters and mercenaries formed during the Hundred Years' War, seized the castle. Tristan de Chalon had to pay him 1,000 guilders, then attack the castle with his troops to recover his property. In 1455, the castle was in ruins.
