If the existence of a cathedral in Chalon-sur-Saône is attested from the 5th century, the current building was built from the 12th century, while the Romanesque art is at its peak. Traditionally, construction begins with the choir (the sacred space, where worship can therefore be celebrated); then the transept, the nave, and finally the facade are erected. Here, three sites are attested to in the Romanesque era: the chapels of the choir, the choir, the transept, the aisles and the walls of the nave (this one is probably not covered with stone but with a wooden frame, the work remains unfinished). Then, in the Gothic period, four building sites stand out: the apse and the cover of the choir are taken over (construction of a vault under a cross of warheads consisting of seven parts, which comes to rest on the pillars of the arcades of the ground floor, of Romanesque era) as well as the transept crossing, the chapter hall was built, all this around 1230; the nave was completed and covered
