Guided tour of the former convent of La Thébaïde
Welcome to the middle of nowhere in this incredible and no less surprising place of the high Dordogne valley and let’s go for a short trip in the late 19th century. The name Thebaid was not chosen by chance: it is a desert region from southern Egypt to Thebes. This story is that of a place, yes, but also the story of a man, a builder priest, Jean-Baptiste Serre. The priest dedicated himself to the restoration of these mostly ruined places of worship that lie at the bottom of the valley since the installation of dams and the construction of buildings when there are none. Thebaid is a whole other story… he wanted to build a house, as he said, in the middle of the woods, to spend the end of his life there, in solitude, like the old monks… It is by walking and looking for a place that meets his wishes that he discovers the ideal place where will be installed his haven of peace. In this oasis in the middle of this green desert, everything is silence, everything is tranquility, if there was to be only one word to describe this place it is the word Peace. This little treasure hidden in the middle of the woods is made of buildings installed in U and a chapel, turned towards the rising sun. This construction began in 1882 and was completed a few years later around 1895
