The castle of Rochebonne belonged to the family of the Châteauneuf de Boutières. Co-seigniory until 1273, the castle was very coveted during the Wars of Religion. Pierre de Châteauneuf-de-Rochebonne, seneschal of the Volcanic hill evicted the Protestants again and again. The family counted a great master in the order of St-Jean de Jérusalem, a governor of Lyons, an archbishop of Lyons and a bishop of Carcassonne.
