Witness to the importance of the city during the Roman era, the ancient Gallo-Roman site of Lyon Fourvière mainly includes a theater and an Odeon. Located on the slopes of the hill of Fourvière, the place is remarkable for its importance and history but it is also a pleasant place to walk with a breathtaking view of Lyon and the Alps. The complex was built only a few years after the creation of Lugdunum and is located in the center of this ancient city. Abandoned in the 3rd century, the site gradually disappeared under the embankments and vegetation. It was only at the beginning of the 20th century that the remains were discovered and then restored. In 1968, the realization of the museum of the Gallo-Roman Civilization is entrusted to Bernard Zerfhuss, Chief Architect of the Civil Buildings and Royal Palaces and Grand Prize of Rome. The objective was to design a site museum and integrate the building into the archaeological park. The museum leaning against the hill is therefore buried
