With a sedimentary fill of more than 7 m thick, approximately 190,000 to 120,000 years old and covering almost the entire glacial cycle (Pléistocene moyen final, MIS 6), the Lazaret Cave – property of the Alpes-Maritime and listed as a historic monument in 1963 – is a prehistoric site of international scientific and cultural interest.
Based on a transdisciplinary approach, this Prehistoric World Site provides a better knowledge and understanding of:
- The emergence of classical forms of Neanderthal man (Homo neanderthalensis) on the Mediterranean coast and more generally in Europe. - The evolution of subsistence strategies developed by these prehistoric men during the ice ages. - The evolution of the material cultures of these prehistoric populations (typology and technology of lithic tools during the transition from the Lower Palaeolithic to the Middle Palaeolithic). - The evolution of social behaviour (cognition) of ancient settlements in southern Europe. - The evolution of palaeobiodiversity (fauna and flora), climates, environments and dynamics of interactions between prehistoric humans and their living environment, on the Mediterranean coast, throughout an ice cycle.
