Salt has long been used as a condiment and preservative. With the development of the industry since the 19th century, it becomes one of the basic materials of the chemical industry. Sea salt, inexhaustible, has the advantage of occurring naturally in the lagoons of our coasts. Traditional techniques for exploiting salt marshes have hardly evolved for centuries.
At Ferrières, salt mining was carried out for a little over a century, at the same time as at other sites in the municipality of Martigues, at Bouc and Ponteau.
The gallery will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 12:30pm and from 2pm to 6pm.
