The tower dates back to the 15th century. In 1741, Jean II Stapleton bought in 1747, the castle of Trèves in the current commune of Chênehutte-Trèves-Cunault (Maine-et-Loire) From 1750, Jean II Stapleton had the castle of Trèves rebuilt, retaining only the keep of the old one. A huge monumental staircase gives access to the new palace. The interior staircase serves various vaulted rooms, bare and deserted. Kitchens occupy the basement and lower are the prisons. From the castle of Trier, only the tower adjoining the church of Saint-Aubin remains.
The total of the Nantes and Angevins heritage amounts to 790,262 livres tournois4. The family’s colonial holdings totalled £1.14 million in 1789, compared with £400,000 in 1751. The building is listed as a historical monument in 19041.
