Gypsy Worlds. The Image Factory. A Photographic History, 1860-1980
The exhibition, designed by the National Museum of the History of Immigration, proposes to explore through several photographs the way in which the image of Gypsy communities was built in France. Considered as eternal strangers in the eyes of the majority, Gypsies benefit in this itinerant journey from a vast work of iconographic research. This work shows how the common places were elaborated around the images. Three photographic perspectives are combined through different sequences reflecting the social, political and economic history of these communities in France. The vision of the anthropologist who tries to grasp the variety of these populations intersects that of the public power that wants to control, exclude and discriminate, especially during the two world conflicts. Photographs of scenes of daily life, parties, moments of joy in the family taken by photographers allow at the same time to extricate individuals from the dehumanization in which they tend to be placed. This exhibition was presented at the Palais de la Porte Dorée in 2018. The exhibition Mondes Tsiganes, made up of 17 panels, is on loan from the Association mayennaise d'action auprès des gens du voyage (AMAV), a partner of the National Museum of the History of Immigration. The Archives of Mayenne will accompany the panels with original archival documents relating to Gypsies and kept in the departmental holdings. AMAV volunteers will be present on September 18 to present the role and activities of the association.
