The castle is built on a rock that overlooks the Pornic estuary. In the Middle Ages, it defended the access to the port which was then on the river Cracaud, and to the river Haute Perche. In the tenth century, Alain Barbetorte, Duke of Brittany, built a wooden building that housed a garrison to defend the accesses to the hinterland by the sea . In the twelfth century, it is the property of the lords of Rais who make it a stone fortress. In the 15th century, it belonged to Gilles de Rais and was confiscated by the Duke of Brittany at the time of his trial. In 1778, the Marquis Alexandre de Brie-Serrant bought the castle of Pornic. During the French Revolution, his wife and daughters were guillotined and his property confiscated. He ended up totally ruined. The acquisition of the castle of Pornic was only partially settled and it is in ruins when the Marquis of Brie Serrant dies in 1814\. He was then still mortgaged to the creditors of his estate, namely Casimir Perier, Jacques Laffitte
