Église de la Nativité de Notre-Dame
19 rue de l'église, 66220 Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes
- Pyrénées-Orientales
- Occitanie
This parish church dates from 1583\. At that time, the insecurity caused by the Wars of Religion had necessitated the transfer of the parish place of worship of Notre-Dame-de-Laval to a new building built away from the village’s fortifications. This new church is of imposing size, it was the capital of an archpriesthood which had thirty-three parishes in the fourteenth century. The church houses many movable objects such as its seventeenth century altarpiece, of classical style, due to the bishop of Alet Nicolas Pavillon, in homage to King Louis XIV, in his royal city of Caudiès-de-fenouillèdes. The statuary of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and the ex-votos of Notre-Dame-de-Laval are also kept in this church as a security measure, following the theft in 1987 of part of the elements of the altarpiece of Notre-Dame-de-Laval.
