The exhibition Les artistes des tranchées. 1914-1918”, presented at the Michelet Museum until October 29, 2022, highlights the craftsmanship and artistic work of the First World War combatants on the front, in the trenches and at the rear.
Through the special collection of Alain Michel, composed of rare and exceptional objects, the materials, gestures and know-how of the artists-soldiers are revealed behind each realization. Whether they are made of brass, stone, wood or simple drawings, the objects on display are an invitation to discover soldiers poets, painters, sculptors, dinandiers, jewelers or musicians.
The achievements of the soldiers reflect the will of the combatants to preserve their humanity in the midst of the horror of war. This exhibition pays tribute to these fighting artists, whatever their nationality, transmitting their testimony and thus perpetuating their memory to future generations.
