Dax is the first spa in France: it is located on dozens of hot water resurgences from an underground fault dating from the rise of the Pyrenees. Hot Fountain Square is probably the heart of the city centre. Here, the source of the Negro delivers 2.4 million litres of water at 64°C every day. Built in 1814 on the remains of an ancient basin from the 3rd century, the fountain includes a large basin and a portico in neo-Greek style.
A legend recounts the benefits of these hot springs: that of the Roman legionnaire and his dog miraculously cured of his rheumatism after a stay in the muddy waters of the river.
The Hot Fountain has been listed as a Historical Monument since 1988.
