Discover the largest monolithic church in Europe
Carved out at the beginning of the 12th century, the monolithic church is an underground religious building that reveals itself to the visitor thanks to its bell tower that reaches 68 meters high! In spite of its impressive proportions (38m long and 12m high), this underground church is indeed hidden from the eyes of the visitors behind a gothic portal, that only your guide will be able to open.
Located in the heart of the city, the monolithic church reminds us of the religious activity of the city in the Middle Ages and fascinates us with its unusual design. A must-see for the European Heritage Days!
The most:
- The doors of these monuments will only open with a guide.
- A paper translation is available in several languages (German, English, Chinese, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian and Ukrainian) on request at the Tourist Office before the beginning of the tour.
Practical information :
- The visit starts Place de l'Eglise Monolithe at the time specified on your ticket.
- Taking pictures is not allowed during the underground monuments tour. We thank you for your understanding.
Do not be late:
To avoid the stress of a late arrival, plan to arrive early enough not to be late for your visit. Indeed, finding a parking space can sometimes take quite a while in Saint-Emilion.
And once the visit has begun: you will not be able to join the group in the underground monuments and will not be reimbursed.
