The cave

The visit of the cave is done in groups of 9 people and lasts about 1/4 of an hour. It is strongly recommended to book a passage schedule by calling 06 78 27 50 07. Attention: the access staircase is steep and without ramp.

The crypts

The visit of the crypts is free but there is one person in each to give explanations. The crypt of the bishops, created in the 19th century, contains the burials of the bishops of Périgueux. It is preceded by a crypt that serves, provisionally, as a lapidary museum. The crypt of the twelfth century is a succession of small rooms, accessed once by a staircase giving into the cathedral

Seat of the diocese of Périgueux, the cathedral of Saint Front is first an oratory before becoming, in the 6th century, a church built on the tomb of Saint Front, combining the Merovingian and then Carolingian styles. It is in the eleventh century that the primary abbey church is equipped with its domes, extension realized with the aim of welcoming the pilgrims of the way to Compostela. It underwent further enlargements in the 14th and 16th centuries before obtaining the title of cathedral in 1669\. Restored by Paul Abadie in the 19th century, it is inspired by the Basilica of St Mark of Venice and the Church of the Holy Apostles of Constantinople. It is a Unesco World Heritage Site.
