Boulevard des Pyrénées
Boulevard des Pyrénées, 64000 Pau
- Pyrénées-Atlantiques
- Nouvelle-Aquitaine
The Boulevard des Pyrénées, which connects the Pau Castle to the Beaumont Palace, was designed as the balcony of the city, from where everyone can come to admire in all seasons the magnificent panorama offered by the mountain chain. It was conceived as the highlight of the beautification of a city that throughout the nineteenth century had established itself as a luxury tourist destination. Jean-Charles Alphand, the engineer who created the first project in 1891, had the ambition of offering Pau the equivalent of the Promenade des Anglais in Nice.
The constraints of the relief required at the time a real technical prowess. Between Place Royale and Palais Beaumont, the edge of the rocky plateau is narrower. A 49-pile viaduct was built to gain space on the void and support this entire portion of the Boulevard. It extends on the rock between the Place Royale and the castle. The development of the complex is completed in 1900.
