Built in the fourteenth century on the ruins of an older castle, the monument underwent several reshufflings and numerous improvements until the nineteenth century. The castle has retained its medieval fortress appearance which is reflected in the water of the wide moat that surrounds it.
Charles Louis de Secondat, better known as Montesquieu, was very attached to the family castle of La Brède. The interior discovery leads the visitor in the footsteps of the writer through the emblematic places where he worked, including his library and his room preserved in his eighteenth century state. The visit of the chapel and the salons reveals the wealth of collections and furniture brought together by the family over time.
A place of pleasure and work, it was here that he returned throughout his life and composed a large part of his work, including Les Lettres persanes (1721), Considération sur la cause de la grandeur des romains et de leur décadence (1734), and De l'esprit des lois (1748). The estate remained the property of the Montesquieu family for nearly 900 years until the death of the Countess of Chabannes in 2004.
