In the upper Valley of the Sée, the establishment of the mills was favored by the rapid and torrential course of the Sée. This one takes its source near Chaulieu, at more than 300 m of altitude then after a course of 15 km, in Chérencé-le-Roussel, it is more than 70 m of altitude. The climate has also favoured the setting up of the mills because the circulation of oceanic air masses pushed by the westerly winds collide with the high altitudes of the bocage and generate very high precipitation. This area is the most watered of Normandy with rainfall heights greater than 1,2000 mm or 1,3000 mm, spread over most of the year. This abundance and regularity in the water supply allow a fairly constant supply that serves as a motor for all these industrial establishments located on the upper reaches of the river.
