A naturalized French Dutch painter and draughtsman in 1921, Léonard Sarluis (1874-1949) developed a very personal style influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and the Symbolists. Close to the decadent environments of the Belle Époque, adored by Oscar Wilde, Émile Verhaeren, Rachilde, Catulle Mendès, Jean Lorrain, Apollinaire and Puvis de Chavannes, Sarluis painted in Chilly-Mazarin in 1921 a set of 8 large formats on the Greco-Greek mythological themeat the request of François-Ignace Mouthon (mayor of the city and director of the Journal, a major conservative daily newspaper between the two wars), in order to decorate the boudoir of his private home, which became city hall in 1971.
